About Sunday Streets in the Excelsior

This will be the third year Sunday Streets has visited the Excelsior. The Sunday Streets route includes Mission St between Theresa/Avalon and Geneva Ave.  Sunday Streets is a pet friendly event.

The Excelsior has many hidden gems to explore, so strap on those skates or walking shoes and get ready to hit the street. From Avalon to Geneva, you are sure to find something along Mission Street that excites you on this route. Each year we collaborate with the Excelsior Festival to bring a day of fun to the community that is enticing for locals and neighborhood visitors alike. The Excelsior Branch Library will also be hosting their sixth annual Tricycle Music Festival at SundayStreets in the Excelsior! Alison Faith Levy, Alphabet Rockers join the line-up for a day of hip-shaking, head bopping dancing in the street party of indie fresh pop rock beats. The Aquarium of the Bay, Rock the Bike, and the Bookmobile will all will be a part of their fun, so make sure to swing by and thank them. They will also raffle off one tricycle to a lucky concert goer at this event!

How to participate

Volunteer

Each Sunday Streets is made possible with the support and dedication of dozens of volunteers. From event prep and neighborhood outreach to staffing the event, there’s something for everyone. Here are a few ways you can lend a hand:

• Neighborhood outreach: Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10am-12pm and 1-3pm between August 19 and September 30
• Volunteer orientation: Weekday evenings at the Livable City Office. View dates/times and RSVP for an orientation here.
• Sign prep: Friday, September 19, 12:30-2:30pm
• Sign posting: Wednesday, September 24, 11-1:30pm
• Event: Sunday, September 28

 Host an activity

All activities that take place at Sunday Streets are offered at no cost to participants, and are led by community organizations, local merchant or neighborhood groups, individuals and Sunday Streets partners who graciously donate their time to make each event so special. Getting there

We strongly encourage biking, walking, or taking public transportation to get to Sunday Streets when possible.

MUNI:  For trip planning and other Muni-related info, go to www.sfmta.com. Bikes are allowed on front racks of buses. The Excelsior Sunday Streets route is served by the following MUNI lines:

• 8x, 43, 54, 88 on Geneva
• 44 on Silver (north of the route)
• J, K, M rail lines on San Jose (approximately ½ mile west of the route)

Additionally, the following MUNI line will be re-routed from the normal route during Sunday Streets but still provide access near to the route:

• 14 re-routed from Mission St to Alemany
• 29 re-routed from Mission St (between Geneva and Persia),  exact reroute TBD
• 49 re-routed from Mission St (between Ocean and Theresa), exact reroute TBD
• 52 re-routed from Mission St (between Excelsior and Brazil), exact reroute TBD

BART: Take BART to the Balboa Park or Glen Park BART stations. The Balboa Park station is just a few short blocks from the southern end of the Sunday Streets route and the Glen Park station is just a few blocks from the northern end of the route. BIKE: Get in the spirit for Sunday Streets by biking there! Go to:  www.sfbike.org to download a bike map to help find a flat, bike-friendly route from your area or the nearest transit stop to Sunday Streets. Got a long way to go? Shorten the trip by taking transit part of the way. Muni buses have bike racks for 2 bikes, BART and Caltrain both allow bikes on board.

By Car: Should you chose to drive, be aware that the Sunday Streets route is towed of all vehicles beginning at 7am and no stopping or parking is allowed on the streets after that (even if you’re just stopping for a moment for a cup of coffee). There are no large parking lots or garages near the route. Sunday Streets strongly encourages participants to bike, walk or take transit to the event.

Detour and Parking Changes

The Excelsior Sunday Streets route is Mission Street between Geneva and Theresa/Avalon. Additionally, the Excelsior Festival will take place on San Juan and Ocean Ave between Persia ave and Mission St.

No parking or stopping will be allowed on Mission St between Geneva and Theresa/Avalon after 7am (even if you’re just stopping for a quick cup of coffee, your car may be towed), and no vehicles will be allowed to drive onto the streets between 10:30am and 4pm.

Recommended Detours:

• Vehicle traffic will be allowed to cross the Sunday Streets route via Ocean/Persia Ave
• East/westbound traffic should use Ocean/Persia Ave to cross the route, or Geneva or Silver Aves to go around it.
• North/southbound traffic should use Alemany Blvd or London St.
