Remember when kids were free to run and play in the streets of their neighborhood? They could get together with their neighbors to play tag, kickball, street hockey, or any other outdoor game. These days there just isn’t enough space for kids to run and play, and we want to change that.

Presented by the Partnership for A Healthier America and the National Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, Play Streets For All is a new program of San Francisco’s popular Sunday Streets. San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), Livable City, and San Francisco Beautiful are collaborating to bring Play Streets for All to four neighborhoods this summer. This pilot program will transform a few blocks of residential streets in the Bayview, Tenderloin, Western Addition and Excelsior into open space for kids to run and play.

To be ready for Play Streets events this summer, SF Beautiful and Sunday Streets will be organizing four free “How to Organize Play Streets” community workshops, throughout the month of May. Workshop participants will learn about the permit process, and about how to get their neighbors and community involved in planning their own neighborhood Play Streets program.

Workshops are open to all who are interested, with priority for members of the host community.

It’s funny how quickly your world can change once you start biking in the city for the first time. A week before I trekked on my bike from the Outer Richmond to the Embarcadero I was telling a coworker about how I would never ride in downtown traffic. A day or so later it took just one thought—why not? What’s actually stopping me from riding in the city? I want to ride my bike. I know how to switch gears. I wear a helmet. I can pump up my tires and know how to change my tubes. That’s far more than most beginners.

After mustering up some guts I set a goal, making the Embarcadero Sunday Streets my destination (which is the furthest point in the city from my home). Then I called up a girlfriend to join me. The rest is history.

I used to view bicycle culture from afar, envious that cyclists could have so much fun getting around town in an efficient, sustainable manner. The number one issue that stopped me from initially hopping on the saddle is what also paralyzes many would-be bikers: fear of cars.

I had attended a few Sunday Streets before, with the intention of leaving my bicycle at home each time. I thought, ‘How could I possibly navigate those blocked off streets with pedestrians in my way?’ Looking back, that was just an excuse—a way to ‘forget’ my bicycle when I should have embraced it. The point of Sunday Streets is to bring the community together while encouraging a bike and pedestrian friendly atmosphere in the city. I can confidently attest that Sunday Streets gave me that extra push, ultimately leading to my love of bicycling. With my fear now defeated, all I want to do is explore the city by bike every day.

Here are a few upcoming opportunities to volunteer or learn more about the volunteer program:

Volunteer Orientation, Monday April 8, 6:30-7:30pm
The next Sunday Streets Volunteer Orientation will be held on Monday, April 8, 6:30-7:30pm at the offices of Dolan Law, 1438 Market St. This is a great chance to learn more about the volunteer program and get all the insider information. All volunteers are required to attend one volunteer training each season. The good news is, after you’ve attended once, you can volunteer as many times as you want all year long!
